Tips for a cozy home
Cozy ToesIt is that time of year; when we winterize the yard, close the windows, stash away the summer tools and turn our thoughts to spending more time indoors.

No matter the size or style of your home, there are certain techniques that you can employ to provide a more comfortable and cozy atmosphere for those times when the weather forces you indoors. Make those times extra comfy with these simple tips (that won’t require a huge investment or major overhaul of your family room).

Cozy BlanketsBlankets. Accessible and beautiful throws will set the ambiance of a comfy room and give people permission to curl up and relax. These luxurious blankets are definitely up to the task of providing comfort on those chilly nights.

Lighting. Lighting is huge, yet often overlooked. Ideally, lighting should come from several different sources. Wall sconces, floor lamps, table lamps, track lighting, overhead lighting. All of these options work together to provide lighting for different needs (i.e. a large family gathering versus a quiet evening reading or watching a movie.) Installing a light dimmer is fairly easy and affordable. Another super quick and easy trick is to switch out “cool” light bulbs for “warm” light bulbs.

Rearrange the FurnitureColor. For an overall mood changer, consider painting the walls. Even just painting one accent wall is a great option. Remember, every color has a mood. Cool colors create an open, airy feeling, while warm colors draw the walls closer and give a cozier feel. Every color can have warm or cool undertones.

Rearrange the furniture
. This is quick, easy and actually kind of fun because you get an entirely new look with minimal effort. Plus, if you don’t like it, you can always move the furniture back. Gathering chairs and couches in small groupings around architectural features in the room (such as a fireplace, bookshelf, bay window, etc.) creates conversational areas that feel nice. As a general rule, furniture should not be flush with the wall. Pulling a couch or chair away from the wall even just a few inches actually helps the room feel less cramped and provides an intimate feel.

Cover the floors. Hardwood or tile floors don’t feel so great on the feet on a cold day. Even carpeted areas benefit from the texture and color of a rug. Besides providing warmth and visual interest, rugs also help define an area, especially in a larger room.

What are some of your favorite ways to make a room feel cozy? We’d love to hear your ideas!
